Of all the subjects I photograph, wildlife is the one I find most rewarding. For me, the best images come from spending time with a subject, understanding its behaviour and allowing moments to unfold naturally.

An important part of that is ensuring my presence does not alter an animal’s natural behaviour or routine. Depending on the species and situation, that may mean remaining completely concealed so the animal is unaware of me, or spending enough time at a respectful distance for it to become comfortable with my presence. The aim is always to leave knowing that my being there has had as little impact as possible.

This approach often creates the best photographic opportunities too. When an animal is relaxed and behaving naturally, it becomes possible to capture more intimate moments, interactions and behaviours that might otherwise never be seen.

Every species presents a different challenge and requires different fieldcraft. Learning where and when to find an animal, understanding its behaviour and working out the best way to observe and photograph it without disturbance are all part of what I enjoy about wildlife photography.
