ScotlandScotland offers some of the most beautiful and dramatic landscapes in the UK, and over a number of trips I’ve had the opportunity to explore and photograph much of the Highlands, travelling from the better-known landscapes further south right up into the remote Northwest Highlands.
Much of the appeal for me as a photographer is the combination of mountains, glens, lochs and coastline, together with Scotland’s famously unpredictable weather. Low cloud moving through the mountains, sudden breaks of light, mist, rain and winter snow can completely transform a landscape within minutes and often create far more interesting conditions than clear skies.
The Northwest Highlands are particularly spectacular. Places such as Torridon and Shieldaig combine rugged mountains with lochs and remote coastal scenery, while further south the west coast, Glencoe and Applecross offer a completely different range of landscapes. Some of my most memorable photographic conditions have come in winter, when snow adds another dimension to the mountains and surrounding wilderness.
There is also something about travelling through the Highlands that lends itself particularly well to landscape photography. Remote roads wind between mountains, lochs and coastline, with the scenery and conditions constantly changing as you travel.
