SVALBARD · HIGH ARCTICSvalbard is one of the most extraordinary places I have ever visited and somewhere that has become very special to me. Arriving in Longyearbyen, one of the world’s northernmost towns and the gateway to the High Arctic, you already have a sense of just how remote this remarkable archipelago is. From there, travelling by expedition ship takes you into a wilderness of mountains, glaciers, fjords, sea ice and an incredible diversity of landscapes.
I originally travelled to Svalbard for its wildlife, but the landscape is every bit as captivating. One moment you can be surrounded by towering mountains and immense glaciers, the next travelling through broken sea ice or past surprisingly colourful tundra and dramatic coastline. Combined with the constantly changing Arctic light and weather, it is a place that rarely seems to look the same twice.
There is something genuinely magical about being there. The scale and isolation of the landscape are difficult to convey in photographs, particularly when travelling into areas with virtually no sign of human presence. Some of my favourite moments have simply been standing on deck, watching the scenery unfold and seeing what the light and conditions create.
Having now visited more than once, Svalbard has lost none of its ability to captivate me. If anything, each trip has made me appreciate its beauty and diversity even more. It is somewhere I know I will continue returning to, both for its wildlife and simply for the experience of being in such an extraordinary part of the world.
