mountain hares, cairngorms, scotland january 2024

At the end of my time up in Assynt we stopped in the Cairngorms to do some Mountain Hare photography; something that has been on my bucket list for a long time.  Much like the landscape trip; we were really hoping for some Snow to be able to photograph these beautiful Hares in but this was not to be.

Instead; we had a mix of sunshine, cloud and an awful lot of wind.  I really enjoyed spending some time with several different very obliging hares getting these images using my Nikon Z8 and 400mm f2.8 TC lens.

Unlike the brown hares that will disappear the moment they know you are near them the Mountain Hares are far more tolerant and we were able with the guidance of Pete Walkden Photography creep quite close; in fact at times I was grateful of the built in teleconverter on my Nikon lens allowing me to switch between 400mm and 560mm.
