Barn Owl

Female Barn Owl in the Snow

I didn’t know where to begin with creating this page.  My absolute favourite thing to photograph is Barn Owl’s and it’s the Barn Owl that sparked my obsession with wildlife and especially owl photography.  I have been very lucky to photograph so many Barn Owls from across the country and witnessed some very special moments of natural behaviour after countless hours in the field learning their behaviour and refining my field craft.

The barn owl (Tyto alba) is one of the most recognisable and widely distributed owl species in the world, instantly identifiable by its pale, heart-shaped face and silent, buoyant flight. In the UK, barn owls are most commonly found hunting over farmland, grassland and marshes, using their exceptional hearing to locate small mammals such as voles even in complete darkness. They typically nest in old barns, tree cavities and purpose-built nest boxes, making them closely linked to traditional rural landscapes. Sadly, habitat loss has led to long-term population declines, and the species is now a strong indicator of the health of our countryside.
